Staple Pinoy Streetfood 101
Whether it's your first time to try street food or you're just checking out if you've missed out on anything new, here is a quick list of some of the most popular Pinoy street food :
Kwek Kwek
Kwek Kwek is a hard boiled quail egg that is coated in orange batter then deep fried.
Another version of Kwek Kwek is called "tokneneng," but instead of using quail egg, itms a hard boiled chicken egg coated in the batter and then fried.
Kwek Kwek is usually eaten with spicy sauce, sweet sauce or vinegar, or all three!
Fishball
Fishballs are just like meatballs, but they're made of fish. They're usually the favorite out of all the Pinoy street food as it's the most affordable.
Fishballs are usually fried on a wok and you have to use a small BBQ stick to get them (a process similar to fishing maybe?).
Betamax
They're called Betamax because of their box-like shape that resembles Betamax tapes.
Betamax is actually grilled chicken blood.
When I found out about Betamax, I couldn't help but wonder how a person could grill blood. Apparently, when the blood is extracted from the chicken and is placed in an open container and cooled down a little, it turns gelatinous so it has a more solid form.
Taho
Taho is made out of soft/silken tofu and sago pearls coated in caramelized brown sugar.
In a lot of places in the Philippines you will hear someone yell "TAHOOOOO" and you'll see the vendor carrying two buckets hanging on a long stick over his shoulder.
'Dirty' ice cream
Dirty ice cream isn't literally "dirty." It is sometimes also called "sorbetes." It is usually served on waffle cones, sugar cones and/or bread buns.
Sorbetes is special because unlike other desserts, it is made from coconut milk.
