6 Tips and Quotes to Guide New Graduates Who Don't Know What Happens Next

Being in your early 20s would feel like the toughest part of your life where fresh out of college you’re aching to find what is out there and whether the “real world” is as tough as everyone says it is.

Self-help books and videos are all over the worldwide web and with just a click, you’ll find thousands of stories how to get through the quarter life phase. From the oldie but goodie, Chicken Soup for the Soul to the popular TED Talks, wading through the uncertainties of quarter-life has become a little easier.

In my personal journey, for every stumble and learning, I make sure to write it down so I’ll understand why I have to go through that later on.

Here are 6 tips that might help you feel better while navigating your 20s.

1. There is absolutely no rush.

Do not let society dictates what you should be doing and how quick you should get there. Wherever you are right now or wherever you might find yourself in the future, stay present. You’ll realize later on that be it sadness or joy, you should have savored the moment.

2. Success doesn’t happen overnight.

It's a learning curve. According to many, early 20s should be spent in being uncertain and in figuring things out. Like a baby trying to walk, you may find yourself stumbling, but get back up and try to do it one more time with much more confidence knowing that failing is not something to be afraid of.

3. Be open to criticisms.

Never equate criticism with dislike. Keep in mind that you are still young and what you have learned in school may not what works in your chosen industry. Better yet, find a mentor who will keep you on your toes and who will make it one of her life’s missions to help you find your own.

4. Smile more.

Whether you are just starting to climb the corporate ladder or trying to get a better grade at grad school or just aiming to find a market for your art, smile more. It won’t cost you except movement of a few muscles. Being a little kinder doesn’t make you a doormat, it just makes you mindful that not everything or everyone is what they seem.

5. Speak your mind.

In your first job, chances are you’ll be the youngest one in the team, but that shouldn’t stop you from airing your ideas. Always remember that the most senior members, even your boss, started where you are.
