Dos and Don’ts During the Hungry Ghost Month
The seventh month of the lunar calendar is said to be the most inauspicious time of the year. More popularly known as the Hungry Ghosts Month, it’s the time of the year when people generally take it easy to avoid bad luck from offending the “hungry ghosts” that roam around and spread ill o. This year, it is believed to start on August 22 (after the solar eclipse!) and end on September 19.
The slowdown is widely practiced not only by the Chinese but also by different sectors. Here are some of the dos and don'ts most of them practice:
It’s said to be bad luck to start home and office renovations during this period in the lunar calendar. Best to reschedule them after Ghost month ends.
Skip on traveling or doing any outdoor activities during this time of the year to prevent any "untoward" accidents.
New projects and contracts for signing are best to be postponed until after the Ghost month.
Wear bright and happy colors to attract positive vibes.
Avoid getting married during the Ghost month to avoid the spirits from “gate-crashing” your wedding and spreading negative vibes. If the date has been already set however, best to have the event between morning and noon.
Avoid talking about the spirits or ghosts as it might offend them and unleash their bad luck on you.
Keep corners of the home bright and well-lit to deflect bad vibes brought about by the spirits.
Play happy and uplifting music to increase the positivity in your surroundings.
It is said that burning incense sticks and making offerings are great ways to protect yourself from the negative energy of the hungry ghosts that are abound.
Avoid wearing anything red or black as it is said to attract ghosts into your home.
Most of these dos and don'ts are actually pretty practical tips while some... well, let's just say it's up to you to decide if these are helpful. There are actually more tips but we chose these pretty easy things for you to try out.
