Puregold Expands Sustainability Efforts, Rolls Out ‘No Plastic Use’ Days Nationwide

Public support for cutting down plastic use is growing and establishments are responding positively to the call for reduced plastic packaging and single-use plastics. We know that these kinds of products clog the waterways, and endanger marine life and ecosystems, which is why taking steps towards curbing their use couldn’t be timelier than right now.

Puregold has always been aware of the importance of sustainability, particularly packaging, in its operations. To underscore this, the supermarket chain launched its “No Plastic Use” campaign in all its National Capital Region (NCR) stores last July 2022. Initially done once a week, the supermarket also gives Php1 cashback for every eco bag used by Perks and Tindahan Ni Aling Puring members.

Because of No Plastic Use days, Puregold has savedmore than 110,000 plastic bags in its NCR stores on its first month of roll-out. For 2022, Puregold is projecting another 30% reduction on its purchases of plastic bags from a year ago.

“We are now expanding Puregold’s ‘No Plastic Use’ nationwide, and extending this to include Mondays and Wednesdays starting September 26,as we continue to work on operating more sustainably,” said Puregold President Vincent Co.

The plastic reduction program is part of a bigger goal to reduce the excessive use of plastic bags and encourage customers, particularly those who buy in bulk, to make changes in the way they consume goods and aspects related to it such as packaging, and how it can impact our planet.

As part of its sustainability strategy, Puregold is reviving its recycling program this September 2022. Under the program, Puregold encourages its customers to exchange their recyclable wastes for essential grocery items, in designated Puregold stores.
