BTS Fans Get Creative With BTS-Mcdonald’s Meal Packaging
Any official merchandise related to K-pop is expensive. An album can cost up to Php2,000, depending on the inclusions. When McDonald’s announced that it would launch a BTS Meal, everyone was excited. The South Korean boy group composed of seven members is a global phenomenon. Their songs “Dynamite” and the newly-released “Butter” are so catchy that everyone—from kids to adults—are familiar to many people and they’re favorites to dance and exercise to.
The BTS Meal for McDonald’s may be “just nuggets and fries” for some but for BTS fans and K-pop fans in general, it is a good way of getting official merchandise for less than Php300.
For many Filipinos, even Php300 for a meal that includes 10 pieces of chicken nuggets, fries, two sauces and a soda is a luxury. So yes, to many fans, this isn’t “just nuggets and fries.”
Naturally, BTS Army, as the group’s fans are known, would want to preserve the packaging the meal comes in. We do know that on June 17, when BTS fans were given special access to the meal a day before it was to be available to the public, some people went to McDonald’s stores (the meal was only available for pick-up on this day) with tumblers to pour the drinks in and food containers for the nuggets. Some washed the sauce covers immediately after eating.
Tip: You can ask the McDonald’s people to place the nuggets and drinks in the normal container and get the special packaging clean. Some agree to this. Some don’t. It largely depends on the store.
We loved how some fans upcycled the packaging. Blogger Ana Gonzales used an old transparent bag to make an Army bag with a keychain using the sauce cover.
Ava Zabat-Te’s DIY phone case was also a hit with us.
Kate Adajar, who is an entertainment blogger at https://randomrepublika.com/ and also loves doing crafts made out of resin, created BTS tumblers out of the BTS Meal.
She also made earrings, a phone case, a griptok, ring, pendant and a keychain out of the packaging.
