More community pantries put up all over country

Note: Ana Patricia Non, the organizer of Maginhawa community pantry, has temporarily stopped the program because of red-tagging. It’s not clear when operations will resume.

Maginhawa St. is known for its restaurants and hangout places but these days, it is more popular for being the birthplace of the community pantry.

A community pantry is a location where people can donate consumable goods and where those in need can pick up what they need for a day.

The Maginhawa St. community pantry was the idea of resident Ana Patricia Non.

In an previous interview, Non said she set up the Maginhawa community pantry to help hungry people in the community.

There is a sign in the area that reminds people: Magbigay ayon sa kakayahan, kumuha ayon sa pangangailangan, which means Give what you can, take only what you need.

From Non's simple idea, community pantries have popped up in different areas of the country.

There are now so many community pantries in the Philippines.

To track these community pantries and learn how you can help, here is an ongoing thread on Twitter.

Paws Philippines has even set up a community paw-ntry outside its office gates at Aurora Blvd. in Quezon City and is encouraging others to do the same.
